DIY Perfume Roller

I am a big fan of making my own beauty and cleaning products. The main thing I love about DIY activities is that not only will they reduce waste, but they are customisable to the individual! You can make it as easy or hard, basic or luxurious, expensive or cheap as you want. Really, there is no limit to the ways you can customise your products.

It is also super cost effective when you buy ingredients in bulk and bring your own container to fill. When you buy a product, you are mainly paying for marketing and branding, then employees salary and ingredients. However, if you choose to make a product yourself, you are just paying for the ingredients!

One last reason why you should choose to DIY more, is the peace of mind it gives you, knowing exactly what ingredients are in your product. You’ll know that there are no nastie toxins or palm oil hiding in the ingredient list.

img_3439.jpgIn this recipe, we only use essential oils to fragrance our perfume roller. Synthetic fragrances commonly contain some nasty chemicals such as phthalates, which make fragrances last longer, but can disrupt our endocrine system if used everyday.

This recipe is as simple as it gets, and is completely customisable!

Get yourself the following things:

  • 15ml roller bottle – or you can just use a jar you own, and dab your finger or a bamboo q-tip in to apply
  • Essential oils of choice – I used Rose Geranium and Grapefruit
  • Fractionated coconut oil – used because of its odourless and colourless features. Make sure its fractionated, otherwise it will set in your vile if the weather is cold, making it hard to use.
  • Rose/lavender petals (optional, but pretty)

All you do is put your petals in first (if using them), then add the coconut oil, finishing it off with 10-15 drops of essential oil, and voila! You have your perfume!

There is so much information online about choosing your scent and having base and top nodes ect. But I think simple is better, and just go with the scents you enjoy! However, if you want to look into the benefits of certain oils and make a perfume roll for a specific purpose (such as focus or sleep), then google will be your best friend to find out which oils to use.

Essential oils are available in any good health food store, or you can buy them online from Biome or Flora and Fauna.
